A Complete Unknown is based on Elijah Wald’s book Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan and the Night That Divided the Sixties, which was originally published in 2015.
The feature will focus on a younger version of the Hurricane singer as he grows as an artist during the early days of his career.
The film also addresses the 82-year-old performer’s unexpected switch to electrically amplified sound and the ensuing controversy.
Development of the project was initially revealed to the public in January 2020, when it was revealed that Chalamet had signed on to star in the film.
In addition to leading the film’s cast, the Call Me By Your Name star is also one of the producers on the project.
At the same time, it was announced that James Mangold, who co-wrote the film’s script with Jay Cocks, would direct the film.
A Complete Unknown will also feature the talent of a cast that includes the likes of Elle Fanning, Nick Offerman and Edward Norton.
Although filming was initially scheduled to begin last year, production was delayed due to the start of the 2023 entertainment industry strikes.

Mangold spoke about A Complete Unknown during an interview with IndieWirewhere he revealed that he had personally consulted with Dylan while working on the film.
‘I have spent several wonderfully lovely days in his company, just one on one, talking to him. I have a script that he personally wrote down and that I treasure,” he said.
The filmmaker went on to state that he felt Dylan’s shift to electrified music had implications for today.
“Everything has enormous relevance even now because of the way we’re all so tribalized with rules about what our music should be, what our rules are, how we talk, how we express ourselves,” he said.
