A Memphis police officer was killed in a shooting at the hands of a teenager who had just been released from prison.

Officer Joseph McKinney, 26, died in the early hours of Friday morning in Memphis, Tennessee. The 18-year-old suspect also died during the incident.

The deceased suspect, Jaylen Lobley, had been arrested last month for possession of an illegal weapon, but was released without bail, according to law enforcement officials.

Another officer was wounded but is currently in stable condition, while a third officer was grazed by a bullet during the exchange of gunfire.

A 7-year-old suspect was injured but is expected to recover, according to police.

As officers approached the car, they were met with gunfire from inside the vehicle, prompting officers to return fire.

The suspect’s vehicle fled the scene, leading to a chase.

Eventually, the car was stopped and one suspect was arrested while the second attempted to escape but was later detained.

Two officers were rushed to One Health Regional Hospital in Memphis, where one remains in non-critical condition. Another officer was treated at the scene and is now in stable condition.

‘We are not only concerned about our agents, but also the general public. It could have been anyone and we’re really disturbed by the audacity and the use of weapons and all these different situations that we’re seeing in our community,” Davis said.

‘We have a family that is now grieving, a wife that is now grieving, the families of the suspects that are now grieving. As a community we have to do better. We have to make sure parents know where our young people are at 3 in the morning,” she continued.
