ITV News presenter Rageh Omaar found himself in hot water with Liverpool fans after a tongue-in-cheek jibe about the Premier League title race during Thursday night’s show.

The news presenter is a self-confessed Arsenal fan and couldn’t resist commenting on Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United which returned Jurgen Klopp’s side to the top of the table.

Arsenal are just two points behind Liverpool heading into the weekend, and defending champions Manchester City are three points behind heading into the final weeks of the season.

Liverpool face a daunting trip to rivals Man United on Sunday, while Arsenal face Brighton and Man City travel to the capital to face Crystal Palace.

Omaar is clearly hoping the Reds’ mistake at the weekend will give Arsenal a chance to go top after hilariously criticizing Liverpool’s win over the Blades.

Announcing Liverpool’s latest victory, the ITV presenter hilariously said: “Sport now and the fight for the Premier League title remains the closest after Liverpool returned to the top of the table.”

‘They beat bottom team Sheffield United 3-1. Alexis Mac Allister scored the goal that turned the game around, so Liverpool are unfortunately two points ahead of Arsenal.

Alexis Mac Allister rescued victory for the Anfield hosts with a long-range goal before Cody Gakpo added a third goal in the 90th minute to condemn Chris Wilder’s side to their 21st defeat of the season.

However, Omaar’s joke has not gone down well with Reds fans, who have been furious online over his preference for Arsenal in the race for the Premier League crown.

One Liverpool fan took to X to express his frustration, stating: “My husband is a Liverpool fan and was furious at this comment. News presenters are supposed to be impartial!”

Another similarly criticized Omaar’s obvious joke, stating: “ITV is totally unacceptable for their journalist to say it is ‘regrettable’ that Liverpool football club have returned to the top of the table. Extremely unprofessional of that presenter.

However, Arsenal fans jumped to the ITV presenter’s defence, with one responding: “Omaar always liked you as a news presenter, and now I’ve found out you’re a Gooner too.” I love it.’

Another supportive response read: ‘Haha, just a little joke. Rageh Omaar is a well-known Arsenal fan.

Omaar has not commented directly on the incident, but has reposted some Arsenal comments on his X profile in response to the criticism.
