An 11-year-old boy from one of Australia’s most prestigious schools has died after an end-of-season rowing event.

Shore student Leon Li suffered an allergic reaction and went into anaphylactic shock while returning home after the event at a restaurant in Mosman in Sydney, the Daily Telegraph reported. It’s unclear what he ate to trigger the reaction.

León had just given a speech at the rowing event organized by the all-boys school, which charges up to $33,000 a year in fees.

With a “heavy heart,” principal Dr. John Collier confirmed the sad news to parents on Thursday.

“Leon was not only a dedicated student but also a much loved and respected member of our Shore community,” he wrote.

“Leon’s untimely passing occurred, to the best of our knowledge, as a result of an anaphylactic reaction to food on Wednesday night.”

He added that León was a “natural leader” and had a “profound impact” on his classmates and teachers.

‘León’s participation in various aspects of school life reflected his diverse interests and talents. He was a valued member of our rowing team and served as coxswain of the Third IV. In addition, León actively participated in cadets, theater, golf and music, showing his multiple skills and passions,” added the director.

Counseling will be offered to schoolchildren.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
