A bewildered Coles shopper revealed staff ordered him to scan “large items first”, sparking concerns the supermarket’s self-checkout is getting “out of control”.
One Reddit user explained that he popped into Coles in Sydney’s Waterloo, where he picked up a basket of groceries and two 24-packs of Pepsi Max cans.
“I started scanning like I always do – bag loose food first, as Coles self-service checkouts tend to fail if you add your own BYO bag mid-shopping,” he said.
“I’m a few points in when the assistant pounces on me and informs me that I’m acting selfishly and wrongly.”

the staff member He said that “drinks needed to be scanned first” and used his swipe card to void food items that the shopper had already scanned and bagged.
“He then proceeded to painstakingly enter my drinks, one by one, through the manual menu,” the shopper said.
‘On my way out I asked the supervisor if that was the standard policy. Apparently yes, it was. “You should scan the large items first,” he said.
“This is how Coles says it should be done now.”
Other buyers have also reported similar experiences on social media.
A former employee of the supermarket giant said the reason Coles is urging shoppers to scan larger items first is to prevent theft.
“It’s because bulk items are stolen the most,” the former employee wrote.
‘Even at normal cash registers they will ask you first if you have any bulk items. It’s hard for workers (who) are abused by customers for things beyond their control. We don’t implement it, we just work there.’

But one Waterloo shopper says the supermarket’s anti-theft measures are becoming too intrusive.
‘Forcing us to use self-service checkouts by removing staff from the usual checkouts was one thing. Installing those ridiculous automatic exit doors was another,” he said.
‘But now we can’t even scan our purchases in the order we want at the checkout?! “This has gotten completely out of hand.”
A Coles spokesperson has since apologized to the shopper and said staff should not undo what a customer has done if it has already started.
