A makeup artist has revealed three habits that can instantly make you look older.

English makeup artist Wayne Goss, who has four million followers on YouTube, said wearing metallic eyeshadow, not using a primer and using the “wrong” type of concealer can add “years” to your face.

“Most of us will use makeup to help improve our appearance, or even to help cover some of the wrinkles we have acquired over the years,” she said.

“However, due to some mistakes, the makeup we are using could actually have the opposite effect and could add not just one or two, but up to ten years to our face.”

1. Avoid metallic eyeshadows

Some may be surprised that metallic eyeshadow can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, which is why matte is a better option.

‘Avoid metallic eyeshadows and opt for a matte one instead. Matte generally works best because it doesn’t draw attention to wrinkled areas or creases,” Goss said.

“Powder is also easier to apply over creams, especially since it’s easier to blend with a good quality brush.”

Goss also recommended never blending eye shadow with your finger and only using good quality makeup brushes for best results.

2. The type of concealer

Using the wrong shade of concealer for your skin is another mistake Goss sees all too often, which can have the opposite effect and highlight wrinkles around the eyes.

“Generally speaking, people can lighten their eye area too much with concealer, which can add years to your face, so it’s very important to get the color that suits your skin tone,” she said.

Cream concealer is always recommended over liquids, and Goss suggests applying the product to the inner corner of the eye, as it’s “the only part of the eye that doesn’t crease.”

3. Always moisturize and use a primer

Many forget to moisturize their skin before applying makeup, which causes the face to dry out faster during the day or night. This can increase the likelihood of fine lines forming and creases showing.

Goss suggested looking at the ingredients in a moisturizer or primer and always prepping your face before applying any makeup.

“As we age, our skin naturally becomes drier, which is why moisturizing ingredients are so important as we age,” she said.

“Look for makeup with ingredients like hyaluronic acid when shopping for makeup and skin care to make sure your products keep your skin hydrated.”

A “heavy” amount of moisturizer should be applied to ensure that the skin stays hydrated.

‘Use a good foundation before you start applying makeup to ensure it acts as a barrier between your skin and makeup to help makeup stay in the right places throughout the day, rather than just on thin spots . lines,” added Mr. Goss.
