Alan Shearer believes Newcastle boss Eddie Howe still has plenty of “credit in the bank” despite the Magpies FA Cup exit.

Two deflected goals from Bernardo Silva in the first half saw Manchester City continue their quest for a ‘double treble’ at the expense of Howe’s men at a rain-soaked Etihad Stadium.

The defeat leaves Newcastle with little to play for in the remainder of the season, with the club locked out of all cup competitions and struggling to secure a place in Europe in the league.

It’s a far cry from Newcastle’s exploits last season, where they finished in the top four and qualified for the Champions League, and it has led to speculation over Howe’s future at the club.

However, speaking to the BBC, Shearer says the Magpies boss deserves to continue the work he has done at St James’ Park.

“It’s been difficult and I think there have been extenuating circumstances,” Shearer said.

“When you talk about injuries, especially Pope, especially Joelinton. They really missed these two players because they bring so much to this team.

“But I think, well, I know he’s got enough in the bank and he’ll be Newcastle manager next season no matter what.”

“Whether it’s if he finishes mid-table or if they manage to get a place somewhere in Europe. But he’s got enough in the bank for what he did last season. They have that confidence in him , I think, and that’s what you should do.

Newcastle have suffered long-term injuries to key players this season, notably goalkeeper Nick Pope, and this has seen them drop out of European competition and exit both cups at the quarter-final stage – although they have secured matches difficult draws in both cases. as well as their difficult Champions League group.

If they are to avoid the same thing happening again next season, Shearer believes Howe needs to be supported this summer and provided with new players. Especially since part of the current harvest has not found the same shape as last year.

The club legend added: “I would say he needs new players in the summer.

“He needs that opportunity to get a few out, you need a new pair of legs to get them in. But there are a lot of players who definitely haven’t hit the heights this season compared to last season – at least four or five of them.

Sitting alongside Shearer in the studio, his former Newcastle teammate Shay Given said the club’s achievements last season may have set expectations too high, but agrees Howe is still the right man for the job. job.

“There is an argument that they outperformed last season, so the drop this season is probably natural,” said the former goalkeeper.

“They are missing some big players, you know, Joelinton and Nick Pope. Even Callum Wilson probably deserves a mention for his goals. So, I think there’s a lot of credit in the bank already and the fans appreciate it.

“But when you’re out of the cup and all the cups and you’re sort of sitting in the middle of the table, there’s going to be question marks, but to me he’s the man that moves the club.”

Newcastle are currently 10th in the Premier League, 15 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
