Europa League and Conference League draw LIVE: Liverpool, West Ham and Aston Villa await their fate with the quarter-final and semi-final match-ups to be decided today

This is, of course, the last Europa League before the format change in all three competitions, as we are almost ominously reminded before the announcement of the special guest…

There has been a battle to secure a fifth place in the Champions League next season by virtue of the coefficients in the top leagues.

Essentially, leagues with clubs performing well in Europe can earn more coefficient points than are ranked against other divisions, with England and Germany behind Italy in that fifth place, and the UCL will expand to 36 teams next season.

However, with Villa, Liverpool and West Ham advancing deep into the Europa and Conference Leagues, as well as Arsenal and Man City in the UCL, the Premier League is picking up more points and has since moved ahead of Germany.

As such, West Ham’s success could mean a boost for their closest rivals Tottenham, who currently sit in fifth place…

Leverkusen achieved the only truly notable comeback of the Europa League round last night, but there were still many goals at stake.

West Ham went into the clash against Freiburg 1-0 down, but five goals, including Kudus’, quickly saw off the Bundesliga side with a dominant 5-1 win in east London.

Similarly, Liverpool beat Sparta Prague 6-1 at home to win 11-2 on aggregate, while Brighton beat Roma 1-0 but were unable to overturn a 4-0 deficit as the Seagulls collapsed.

A total of 30 goals in last night’s eight games!

At first glance this seems like a normal series of results from the previous round, doesn’t it?

Take a look at the match between Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Oympiacos: the visitors had been beaten 4-1 at home, but managed to turn it around, 4-1 on the night before forcing extra time and sealing a magnificent 6-1 victory – 7-5 in total!

It certainly makes the 0-0 aggregate draw between Viktoria Plzen and Servette seem a little more monotonous, doesn’t it?

We still have half an hour until we have some names on the board in these competitions, so…
