MAILBOX: In our new Q&A series, we invite you to submit your questions on any topic to be answered by some of The Mail’s brightest stars. Following Peter Hitchens last month, Royal Editor Rebecca English is in the main seat today from 12:00pm UK time (8:00am Eastern Time). Follow our live coverage here and ask your questions in the comments section:

‘I can understand protecting your family, but in this horrible age of mirroring and fake reports, surely Prince William and Catherine can share some information that will discourage internet searches? In your opinion, when do you expect a press release regarding Catherine’s health and return to public service and how can their team be more proactive about information sharing?’

REBECCA: Hi Eon, and thanks for your question. The rumors and conjectures we have seen, particularly on social media, in recent weeks about the health and well-being of the Princess of Wales have been nothing short of disgusting. I know that even though she doesn’t have her own social media accounts, Catherine is not ignorant of some of what has been said and she has understood that it is upsetting. Wales’ position has been not to respond to the trolls – why give them oxygen to talk about? Which is understandable in many ways. Having said that, I believe that Kensington Palace has been a bit naive in believing that one of the most famous women in the world could disappear without a trace for three months without people worrying about her, and should have given some more proactive updates before. I think this would have helped to dispel the presumption. It’s unlikely we’ll hear much more until she’s ready to return to public duties. Last I checked, it was probably still after Easter.
