Just days after his controversial citizen’s arrest outside the Grammy Awards, Killer Mike is opening up in his first in-depth interview since the altercation.
The 48-year-old rapper (born Michael Render) was led away in handcuffs after an altercation with what he called an “overzealous security guard” at Crypto.com Arena.
The arrest came after he swept the rap category, winning Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.
It opened to GQ and revealed that he had a ‘long conversation with God’ after the altercation, although he was grateful because his son found a kidney donor the next day.
‘I could have succumbed to anger or evil and talked shit. But I’m just grateful. “I talked about this album being a return to the religious and moral principles I was raised with,” he began.

“And I just have to tell you, man, you’re going to find yourself in a position where it’s just you and God,” he added.
And it took me a couple of hours, man. “I was alone and I was grateful that I took the time to thank God and say, ‘I appreciate the blessings you’ve given me,'” he continued.
‘I spent time talking. I’m invoking the spirit of my grandmother and my mother and just saying, “Look, I’ve done it.” And after a few hours, man, I went out and partied and had fun,” she admitted.
He added that he was “glad I used those three hours to be grateful to God, be calm and meditate.” Because the next morning I got a call saying that my son, after being on the list for three years, finally got his kidney.’
The rapper’s son, Michael “Pony Boy” Render, underwent surgery on Monday and underwent a successful kidney transplant, after waiting three years to find a match.
‘And I can really tell you that God is real. And in the same way that Christ gave us an example of being alone, of being tempted by Satan, now I understand it much better because he could have succumbed to anger or evil and talked shit,’ he said of his arrest .
But I’m just grateful. I’m thankful. Not only did I win, but I am grateful that God showed me in 24 hours that there is something more important than even the accolades you have worked for. And that’s my family and my son and I’m just grateful. I thank you,’ he said.
When asked what his Grammy win symbolizes for rap culture right now, he said, “I know when Kendrick wins, people say, ‘Oh shit, they did good.’ I know when others have won, “They say, ‘They didn’t do it right.’ Damn, they did it right this time. They honored the culture.”

He also clarified that he had already won a Grammy before his rap sweep on Sunday night.
‘I want people to understand that I was a Grammy winner before I won it (Sunday). I won for The Whole World by Outkast, absolutely incredible verse, I worked my ass off there as a rookie.’
