Smoke and fire filled a beach in Ubatuba, a city in the southeastern Brazilian state of São Paulo, moments after a Cessna with five people on board overran the Ubatuba Airport runway before crashing and exploding. A pilot was killed and four passengers survived after a small plane crashed in Brazil on Thursday morning.

Surveillance camera footage showed the Cessna 545 was about to land when it suddenly overran the rainy runway of Ubatuba Airport in Ubatuba, a coastal city in the southeastern state of São Paulo.

The plane crashed and exploded before much of it ended up in the ocean on a nearby beach.

Bystanders recorded rescuers carrying two children out of the waves after pulling them from the wreckage.

Mireylle Fries, her husband, Bruno Almeida Souza, and the couple’s young son and daughter, were taken to Santa Casa de Ubatuba Hospital and are in stable condition, Karoline Magalhães, captain of the Ubatuba Fire Department, told Globo News .

The pilot, Paulo Seghetto, was removed from the doomed plane and suffered cardiac arrest before dying on the spot.

The Ubatuba city government and São Paulo’s Ministry of Public Security said a person who was on the beach was injured.

Rede VOA, the company that manages the airport, said a woman and her child were hit by the plane and survived.

The plane took off from Mineiros Municipal Airport in Mineiros, a city in the central state of Goiás, and encountered poor weather conditions in Ubatuba, including a wet runoff before smashing through a fence.

According to National Civil Aviation Agency records, the plane was owned by Fries and her family.

It was built in 2008 by Cessna Aircraft. It has a capacity for seven passengers and two pilots.

Landing requires a runway of 2,588 feet. The runway at Ubatuba Airport has a length of 900 meters.

Weberton Moreira told Brazilian news channel G1 that he was riding his bike and diving when he noticed a fireball erupting from the plane.

“I dropped the bike, just saw the fiery figure and ran,” Moreira said.

‘I jumped off the bike. I felt hot steam near me, I lowered my head and ran away.’

Eduardo Gava, a professor, told the outlet that he decided to drive instead of walk because of the rain when he saw the small plane flying near him.

“I was making a U-turn just after passing the road because I was about to turn around when I heard a loud noise from the turbine engine,” he said.

‘It crossed for me. It didn’t drag me for about 50 meters ((64 feet),” he added.

‘It exploded before my eyes. I panicked, parked and I’m still shaking.”

Brazil’s air force said the Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center has been dispatched to lead the investigation.
