A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after she was shot in the back while sitting in a car outside a suburban home.

Emergency services were called to Trees Road in Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast about 12pm on Wednesday following reports of shots fired.

A woman, 33, who was sitting in the passenger seat of a blue Volkswagen Jetta outside a home was treated for life-threatening injuries before being rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

Dozens of police and forensic officers were seen examining the crime scene and interviewing residents as detectives launched a major investigation.

Images from the scene showed at least five police vehicles parked outside the house.

No arrests or charges have been filed and police have not yet located the firearm used.

It is understood the The woman was among a group of people helping someone move out of the house at the time.

“I understand the car has been parked in the same location for a couple of hours,” Detective Inspector Mark Mooney told reporters.

“We have contacted the homicide squad because the victim’s injuries are critical and we do not know at this time if he will survive or not.”

Before the shooting, dozens of people had come to the house to pick up furniture advertised on Facebook Marketplace.

At least 10 people assisted police in their investigations on Wednesday.

It is understood another person was inside the Volkswagen Jetta at the time of the incident.

Police suspect the shots were fired from inside the vehicle.

“At this point we don’t know who the shooter is. “There were a number of people at the address collecting property,” Inspector Mooney said.

“Our forensic examination of the vehicle has not yet been completed, but it appears that the victim was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle and was shot in the seat.”

Police have not ruled out the possibility that the shooting was an accident.

They are urging all witnesses who left the scene before officers arrived to come forward.

“We would like to speak to anyone who was present to give us any information we don’t already have,” Inspector Mooney said.

“It’s going to be a complex investigation.”

He stressed there was no ongoing threat to the public.

A Queensland Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday night there were no further updates.

Neighbors were shocked to return home and find the street cordoned off by the police.

“The police who turned up basically surrounded… the residents when we arrived so we didn’t see much,” one resident told Nine News.

The incident also shocked the community.

“A police van drove past us screaming. Scared the hell out of us all,” one local posted online.

Another added: “It doesn’t sound good at all.”
