Troy Deeney was involved in a testy dispute with two guests while live on television and claimed he was working “unpaid” for coverage of Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Arsenal.

The outspoken pundit is never short of a controversial opinion and he was at it again after describing Newcastle as an “undesirable” place to live, a comment that sparked a backlash online and outside the Emirates over last night’s Carabao Cup semi-final .

Deeney was part of the CBS Sports expert panel for the game and participated in the in-stadium debate alongside seasoned broadcaster Geoff Shreeves.

Former Aston Villa and West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker and former US youth international Mike Grella were in the studio and couldn’t resist exchanging off-the-cuff comments with Deeney during his performance.

The awkward segment began after Reo-Coker made his first attack on the loudmouth.

“It’s good that you came to work today,” Reo-Coker said to Deeney.

Deeney then replied: ‘Says the man who’s been on holiday for two weeks. Well done. No problem. I apreciate it.’

He went on to claim that he was not paid for his contributions, adding, “More importantly, I’m doing this for free, once again.” So if we can change that. We’re having a great time.’

Then Grella came in and said, ‘Troy, Geoff (Shreeves) was here last week and took all the money. We have nothing left. We had to include the great Geoff Shreeves.

Deeney replied: ‘That’s why you don’t have a tie, bro. It’s mental.’

Speaking after Newcastle’s Carabao Cup quarter-final victory against Brentford last month, Deeney claimed Tyneside was not an attractive place for players to live.

“He’s right at the top of the country,” he told CBS Sports in a withering verdict. ‘I don’t want to be disrespectful, but it’s not a desirable place to live because you’re so far from London. It’s like four or five hours.

‘It is difficult to get people there, to get investment, but they will have to do it. They must have known before they bought it because these guys aren’t stupid.

Deeney was confronted about his comments by a Newcastle supporter outside the Emirates. However, when asked about the timing, he doubled down on his stance.

“I wasn’t lying,” he insisted, much to the amusement of his colleagues.

Deeney has not officially retired from football. He last played for Forest Green Rovers, having joined as player-coach before taking over permanently in December 2023 after David Horseman left by mutual agreement.

But he was fired just 29 days later, and after just six games in charge.

He had publicly criticized his players following the home defeat to Harrogate, saying he would “rather watch Antiques Roadshow” than his own team. Deeney lost three and drew three of his six league games in charge of the club.

A furious Deeney also accused his players of being “prisoners running the prison” and claimed there were “too many babies up and down”.

He has played 628 games to date and has scored 182 goals.
