Ruben Amorim has revealed that Marcus Rashford wants to return to action for Manchester United and that his decision is to leave the unstable star out, saying: “I know what I’m doing.”

Rashford has missed the last three games and put his future at Old Trafford in doubt by saying in an interview that he is ready for a new challenge after two decades at United.

However, Amorim has clarified the situation by confirming that Rashford is eager to play again but that he will not be called up until he is at his level in training.

“Yes, it’s my decision,” Amorim insisted. ‘He wants to play. He’s trying. It’s my decision, only my decision.

‘(There is) no situation. When I feel the time is right, I will change something. Until then I will continue to think about what is best for the team.

“I spoke to a lot of players individually during training, so I’m trying to do things my way, and it’s the only way I know. If I don’t do that, I will get lost and I won’t get lost. I know what I’m doing.’

Despite questioning the influence of Rashford’s camp on his decision to speak in the interview, Amorim denies that the issue has become a distraction.

“No, I don’t think so,” he added. “Neither for me nor for the other players, because they are all there every day during training. They understand. That is the key point.

“I’m very focused and they know, I’m very clear in my message, everyone at Carrington knows what I’m talking about and what I want from Marcus and everyone else.

‘So it’s not a distraction for us. Maybe it is for the media, but that’s none of my business. For the media and for the rest of the people, I can’t control that.”

Asked if he had spoken to Rashford and what he needed to see from the player in training, Amorim replied: “Like any other player, the best he can be.

‘If you have great talents, great performance, great responsibility, great commitment, push everyone forward right now. And some guys have a big responsibility here because they’re here for a long time.

“This is perhaps one of the lowest moments in our club. So we have to face it and be strong right now. That’s what I want for every player on the team.

“I talk to him every day, not about the interview but about the performance.”

Amorim left the door open for Rashford to return to Wolves on Boxing Day but gave no guarantees he would be brought back in from the cold.
