Sporting Lisbon will reportedly part ways with Ruben Amorim’s replacement just a month into his reign at the club.
After more than four years at Sporting, Amorim left the club last month to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.
During his tenure, Amorim secured Sporting’s first league title in more than two decades before repeating the feat last season as speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League intensified.
After Amorim departed for pastures new, the club named former Portugal international Joao Pereira as his successor.
Pereira had previously managed the club’s reserve team and took over the first team on 11 November.
However, after winning just one of their first four league games, the club are set to sack the 40-year-old.
Joao Pereira would be fired as coach of Sporting Lisbon in the coming days
The 40-year-old coach, who had been in charge of Sporting’s reserve team, was promoted to first team coach following the departure of Rubén Amorim.
However, since taking the reins, the club has only managed one win in its last four league games.
According to a Portuguese media Record newsThe decision comes after the club’s recent poor run of form which also included a 5-1 thrashing at Arsenal and a 2-1 defeat at Club Brugge in the Champions League.
The report claims that club officials will meet with Pereira after the Christmas break and that he is not expected to remain in the role when Sporting host Benfica on Sunday.
Despite a recent run of stumbles under Pereira, Sporting remain top of the Primeira Liga, ahead of second-placed Porto on goal difference.
The club has also reached the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup, having survived a scare against Santa Clara on Wednesday, to triumph in extra time thanks to a goal from star striker Viktor Gyokeres.
Meanwhile, Amorim has had a mixed start to his life at Old Trafford.
After winning just one of his first four Premier League games at the club, Amorim led United to a dramatic victory in the Manchester derby against their bitter rivals last weekend.
However, any hopes that the result would serve as a turning point for what has been the club’s worst start to a Premier League campaign were quickly dashed.
On Saturday, United were comprehensively beaten by Bournemouth, with the Cherries taking a 3-0 victory.
During his four years at Sporting, Amorim led the club to two league titles and two league cups.
Subsequently, Amorim has had a difficult start at Manchester United since replacing Erik ten Hag.
Speaking after the match, Amorim insisted there was “anxiety” among his team, but vowed to persevere in their tactical rebuild.
“Right now, everything is very difficult,” Amorim said. “For a club like Manchester United to lose 3-0 at home is very hard for everyone.
‘The fans are really disappointed and tired. You feel in the stadium on the first play. I understand it, but we have to face it. I felt it from the first minute, there is a lot of anxiety.
“Everyone at the club is tired of these moments. We have to face it and focus on the next game.”
