The Comoros-flagged ship Amnah capsized in the port of Ambarli-Marpot in Istanbul, Türkiye.

This is the terrifying moment the crew of a huge freighter were forced to fight to safety after it capsized and sank.

The Comoros-flagged ship, named Amnah, capsized in the Ambarli-Marpot port in Istanbul, Turkey, forcing at least 15 people to jump off the ship, according to local reports.

Terrifying images of the capsize showed the freighter sinking and several people running away from their desks.

Huge containers could be seen sinking into the water around the port.

A separate video of the aftermath showed the ship lying on its side at a steep angle, with its hull touching the sides of the harbor.

Local media reported that three people were forced to jump into the waters around the ship, where they were rescued by tugboats.

One crew member reportedly suffered minor injuries during the chaos.

Turkey’s Transport Ministry said in a statement about X: “The risk to the marine environment has been controlled and the ship is surrounded by floating barriers.”

The Amnah had arrived in Istanbul from the port of Derince, located in Izmit Bay, west of Istanbul.

It was built in 1996 and is 101 meters (331 ft) long and 18 meters (59 ft) wide.

It comes a year after a cargo ship was split in half in a storm off the coast of Turkey as rescuers desperately searched for 11 sailors from another ship that sank in choppy waters.

The Cameroon-flagged Pallada broke in two after running aground in 16-foot waves off Eregli, a coastal town east of Istanbul. All 13 crew members were rescued.

But the weather hampered efforts to reach another cargo ship, the Turkish-flagged Kafkametler, which sank off the same coast in Turkey’s Zonguldak province with 12 crew members on board.

Rescuers recovered the body of a crew member from rough seas, while desperately searching for the other 11 sailors.
