Bill Belichick has added a household name to a crucial position on his North Carolina coaching staff, his son Stephen Belichick, as his defensive coordinator.

The younger Belichick is currently Washington’s defensive coordinator and will make the move to Chapel Hill after the Huskies’ bowl game against Louisville on Dec. 31.

The 72-year-old Belichick made the shocking move to college football earlier this month and will not coach in the NFL for the first time in his career.

Stephen worked under his father for eleven seasons with the New England Patriots and served in four different roles on his father’s defensive staff.

After Bill was let go by the Patriots, Stephen also moved on, starting his lone season in Washington.

There does not appear to be an agreement in place for Stephen to take over as Tar Heels head coach when Bill retires or leaves the school as part of a contract.

It is unknown if Brian Belichick, Stephen’s younger brother, will also join them in Chapel Hill.

Brian has been the safeties coach for the Patriots since 2020, staying on the staff after his father and older brother moved elsewhere.

In his first season in charge of a defense, Stephen improved Washington’s defense from 99th in the FBS to No. 26 in total defense.

Bill Belichick is an eight-time Super Bowl winner and won his first two Lombardi Trophies as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants.

The elder Belichick went on to win six Super Bowls as head coach for the Patriots during his 24-year career.
