- Hamstring injury continues to worry Glenn Maxwell
- Unlikely to feature in T20 Big Bash until Boxing Day
- He was injured in the November T20 clash against Pakistan.
All-rounder Glenn Maxwell may not play for the Melbourne Stars until after Christmas as he failed to recover from his hamstring injury in time for his side’s second Big Bash League match on Wednesday night.
The explosive star missed his team’s opening BBL defeat to the Perth Scorchers on December 15 after injuring himself while playing a T20 for Australia in November and Maxwell was expected to be fit for the MCG clash against the Brisbane Heat.
But the 36-year-old hasn’t done enough to take his place in the XI, and the Stars will only play once more, against the Strikers in Adelaide on Friday, December 20.
A Boxing Day clash with the Sydney Sixers at the MCG could be a more likely return game.
Cricket Australia is monitoring Maxwell’s recovery and understands caution is being urged with Maxwell, who is tipped to be key to Australia’s Champions Trophy ODI campaign in 2025.
It comes after Australian cricket great David Warner launched a recent attack on his former teammate Maxwell, declaring that the all-rounder “doesn’t deserve” to be in the squad ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka at the end of January.

David Warner recently launched a stunning attack on his former teammate Glenn Maxwell, declaring that the all-rounder “doesn’t deserve” to be in the mix for the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka at the end of January.
Warner pointed to Maxwell’s lack of red-ball cricket with Victoria at Sheffield Shield level as the reason why selectors should look elsewhere (Maxwell is pictured, playing at Test level against Bangladesh in 2017) .
Pat Cummins’ men will play two Tests on the subcontinent, but Warner pointed to Maxwell’s lack of red-ball cricket with Victoria at Sheffield Shield level as the reason the selectors should look elsewhere.
Maxwell, 36, has played seven Tests for Australia, with a highest score of 104.
‘The Big Show’ was expected to play in a recent Shield match for Victoria, as well as for the Prime Minister’s XI against India, but had to withdraw from both matches due to his hamstring injury.
His most recent setback at T20 level with the Stars will leave Warner feeling vindicated after claiming his Maxwell has not done enough in the longer format to warrant a place in the plane.
‘If you don’t get picked for your Shield team, why do you deserve it? You have to really want it, want to play cricket for four days,” Warner told News Corp.
‘Unless you put your hand up, you’re playing all the club cricket and all that, to want to play Test cricket.
“He, in my opinion, does not deserve that opportunity.”
