Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are monitoring his injury on a “day-by-day basis,” with a verdict on Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans still hanging in the balance.
Mahomes was limping away during the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ win over the Cleveland Browns Sunday when he rolled his ankle while being tackled by Dalvin Tomlinson on a fourth-down incompletion.
Carson Wentz replaced the three-time Super Bowl winner, who was later confirmed to have suffered a high ankle sprain.
However, the Chiefs have not ruled out the quarterback for this weekend’s game against the Houston Texans with the No. 1 pick still hanging in the balance.
Head coach Andy Reid indicated Mahomes would practice Tuesday, with the Chiefs making their game decision “day by day.”
And later that night, Kansas City listed their star man as a full participant in the workout, which was a big boost ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Houston.

Mahomes had said before the session that he would look at Tuesday’s practice as an indicator of the health of his ankle, but admitted he is always driven to push himself to play.
“The reason you play this game is to push to make plays, so I’m going to get going in practice and try to push it and see where I can get,” Mahomes told reporters during a news conference on Tuesday.
“But I’m not going to put our team in a bad position, so if I can play and go out there and win a football game, then I’ll play. If I feel like it’s not the best scenario, I’ll let guys like Carson play.”
Coach Reid insisted he would remain in constant communication with Mahomes, the team’s doctors and trainers throughout the week to monitor the signal caller’s condition.
“We’ll see how it works out for him, and if he can’t work… then Carson will take on the reps that Pat isn’t doing,” Reid added.
But the 66-year-old assured fans that if Mahomes can go, “he will go.”
After Sunday’s game, Mahomes had said the X-rays came back negative. He said he would have lobbied harder to stay in if the Browns had gotten within one score.

Before Wentz went in, Mahomes had his left ankle re-taped while sitting on the bench. He walked gingerly off the field, but didn’t feel comfortable being in the locker room or going to his post-match press conference. He was wheeled on a cart to the Chiefs buses.
The Chiefs are set to enter the home leg of the regular season with a busy festive schedule.
The 13-1 Chiefs will host the Houston Texans on Saturday as Kansas City tries to lock in home field advantage for the upcoming playoffs.
Just four days later, they will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day.
