The BBC says it has lodged a complaint with US tech giant Apple over artificial intelligence-generated fake news stories that were shared on iPhones and attributed to the broadcaster.
Apple Intelligence, which launched in Britain this week, produces aggregated notifications from various information sites that have been generated by artificial intelligence.
One of them suggested that the BBC News website had published an article claiming that Luigi Mangione, arrested in the United States for the murder of a healthcare executive in New York, had committed suicide.
“BBC News is the world’s most trusted news outlet. “It is essential to us that our audiences can trust any information or journalism published on our behalf and that includes notifications,” a BBC spokesperson said in a statement.
“We have contacted Apple to raise this concern and resolve the issue.”
He BBC reported that a similar incident had occurred in relation to notices attributed to the New York Times, although this was not confirmed by the US publisher.
