A child has died and four others are fighting for their lives after a car allegedly plowed into a group of cyclists in New South Wales’ Central Tablelands.
The horror accident occurred on Long Swamp Road, about 14 kilometers south-west of Armidale in New South Wales’ Northern Tablelands, at 3.30pm on Saturday.
One cyclist, believed to be a child, was pronounced dead, while three others were rushed to hospital.
The driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 40s, had to be freed after crashing into a tree. She is being treated at the scene and remains in critical condition.
“There are still a number of paramedics at the scene,” a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.
“Two cyclists were transported by road to Armidale Hospital, while a third cyclist was taken to Armidale Airport to be met by a Westpac rescue helicopter.”
“The driver, a woman in her 40s, is in critical condition.”
A New South Wales Police spokesperson said they responded to reports that “A car and several cyclists had collided, before the car continued and crashed into a tree.”

‘One of the cyclists died at the scene. “He has not yet been formally identified,” the spokesperson added.
“Three other cyclists were injured and are being treated at the scene.
‘The driver of the vehicle became trapped and was freed shortly after the arrival of emergency services. She is also being treated at the scene.
“The conditions of all the injured are unknown.”
Long Swamp Road, near the Edwards Road intersection, remains closed and is not expected to reopen until tomorrow (Sunday, December 15, 2024).
