Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace claimed she was “physically harassed” on Tuesday by a trans rights activist at the US Capitol building.
James McIntyre, 33, was arrested inside the Rayburn House office building in connection with the incident, Capitol Police said.
Mace, who has campaigned to ban trans women from women’s facilities around Congress, said the alleged assault was due to her “fight to protect women.”
She posted on X: ‘Tonight I was physically harassed on the Capitol grounds for my fight to protect women. Capitol Police arrested him.
‘All the violence and threats continue to prove our point. Women deserve to be safe. Your threats will not stop my fight for women!’
The suspect, McIntyre, of Illinois, faces a charge of assaulting a government official.
A spokesperson for the Capitol Police said according to The New York Post: ‘Just before 6:00 p.m., the member of Congress’s office reported an incident in the Rayburn House office building.
“Officers from the House Division and agents from the Threat Assessment Section located the suspect.”

“After an investigative interview, officers arrested the suspect.”
Mace, a South Carolina Republican, has been campaigning to ban transgender lawmaker Sarah McBride from using women’s bathrooms around Congress.
The elected Democratic representative is the first openly trans politician elected to Congress and is the highest-ranking elected trans politician in the nation’s history.
Mace has said her post-traumatic stress disorder from past sexual assault led her to push to ban McBride from entering women’s bathrooms and locker rooms.
The 47-year-old has posted videos calling McBride a man, repeatedly talking about his private parts and criticizing transgenderism.
Last month, Mace introduced a bill that would require House members and staff to use bathrooms corresponding to their biological sex.
The move would specifically mean that McBride, who was born a man, would have to use the men’s facilities.
The Capitol’s top security officer, the Sergeant at Arms, would be tasked with enforcing the policy.
“The thought of a man being in a dressing room with me as a survivor of sexual violence puts me over the edge and I’m not going to stand for it,” Mace previously said.

“And I am so proud of the women and girls who have the courage and bravery to stand up and shout from the rooftops that this is not okay.”
“There’s a big difference between being for civil liberties and then being for women,” Mace continued. “Women have rights and we are not going to erase them.”
Mace and her staff have been subject to a series of threats since she pushed to introduce the ban in November.
She previously said ‘trantifa’ wanted to kill her in response to a report on X about a trans person in Portland, Oregon threatening to kill her.
‘NGL. I had to Google “trantifa”. “I’ve learned a lot this week,” Mace wrote last November.
“These people deserve a room in prison and/or a psychiatric ward,” he continued before criticizing Oregon leaders.
‘Also, wonder out loud what @Portland_State and Oregon Governor @TinaKotek think about an alleged student threatening to kill a congresswoman?’ she continued.
She was responding to a post that identified the person who posted a series of threats against Mace and author JK Rowling as a 24-year-old transgender student activist living in Portland.
‘Trantifa’ is a term that refers to a rise in extremism and threats of violence by far-left transgender activists. A United Nations researcher warned about this trend last year.
