Australians stocking up on gifts during the peak Christmas shopping period have been warned not to purchase several products that could pose deadly dangers.
The government product safety regulator led by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a series of product recalls that could end up under the tree over the festive season and put their owners in hospital.
Anyone who has already purchased any of the items should stop using them immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a refund, the ACCC said.
Jishaku: The game of magnetic action
The safety regulator said this board game does not comply with the permanent ban on small, high-powered magnets.
“There is a permanent ban on separate or loose small high-power magnets that have a flux rate greater than 50 (kG)2 mm2 and are used in certain toys or jewelry,” the regulator said.
‘If children swallow multiple magnets, they can stick together in the intestine or digestive tissue, causing serious internal injury or death. They also pose a suffocation risk.’
The product is sold by Booktopia, who also performs the pickup.
Owners should stop using these products immediately, keep them out of the reach of children, and contact Booktopia customer service for a full refund and further instructions.
The set sold by Booktopia contains small, strong magnets that can pose a choking hazard and also build up once ingested and clog the digestive tract.
Carlsen Magnetic Chess Set
Similarly, the Carlsen Magnetic Chess Set sold by Promo Brands also has 12 small, high-powered magnets.
The ACCC said anyone who has purchased this product should follow the same instructions by keeping the product out of the reach of children and contacting Promo Brands for more details.

‘It also does not include the required warning label.
‘There is a risk of serious burns if exposed to a source of heat or flame. Consumers may not be aware of this risk.
“An incident has occurred resulting in serious injuries to a child.”
Those who purchased the hoodies should stop using them immediately and keep them out of the reach of children.

VidaXL Folding Dog Pool
The ACCC said these dog pools, which could be purchased for furry family members during the summer period, present a dangerous hazard.
Despite being shallow, they pose a drowning risk for children.
They come in blue and red and in various sizes ranging from 80 cm x 20 cm to 300 cm x 40 cm.
«The products do not meet the mandatory standard for portable pools. “The products do not have the required warning signs and messages,” he said.

This model of pedal bike sold by 99 Bikes Pty Ltd has been recalled for safety reasons.
“The affected stand mounting plate welds may be defective on some bikes and the stand may fail if overloaded,” the ACCC said.
‘Consumers may not be aware of the risks associated with using the stand or carrying a passenger on the back of the bike.
Buyers who have purchased the Pedal Packer cargo bike from 99 Bikes should contact the supplier for an inspection to resolve the issue.
‘There is a risk of serious injury or accident if a passenger on the rear seat of the bicycle comes into contact with the moving parts of the bicycle.
