Illinois assistant coach Dana Dimel has died at the age of 62, his family announced Tuesday.
Dimel coached for 35 years and served as head coach at Wyoming, Houston and UTEP.
His most recent position saw him help guide Illinois to a 9-3 record this year as the program’s senior offensive assistant.
Dimel, a former All-American offensive tackle at Kansas State, is survived by his wife, Julie, and children, Winston and Josey.
“Today is a difficult day for college football and for our Illini family,” said head coach Bret Bielema.
‘Dana was an exceptional person, husband, father, friend and soccer coach. He touched the lives of countless coaches, players and staff members over more than three decades in college football.

After playing offensive tackle for the Wildcats from 1984 to 1986, Dimel signed a free agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings and attended training camp in 1987 before moving into coaching.
