What started as a celebration for Naomi Briggs’ 16th birthday turned into a nightmare when the teenager was shot in the early hours of Thursday morning. Naomi is now fighting for her life in an Oregon hospital, following a chilling text message she sent to her mother, Drea Briggs: “They shot me. Mother. Please. Help me.”
Drea, shocked and terrified, rushed to the hospital, where Naomi was receiving life-saving treatment. The teenager remains in intensive care, undergoing a series of surgeries to address the extensive internal damage caused by the bullet. “She’s hooked up to machines and her entire abdomen is still open,” Drea shared.
“The doctor told me there was a chance I might not make it, so it’s been a struggle.” Naomi, described as a typical teenager who loves friends, animals and children, has already undergone four surgeries and has another scheduled. Doctors warn that his recovery will be long and arduous. The alleged shooter, 1Sky Korbut, 8 years old, has been arrested and charged with third-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
Authorities say Korbut purchased the firearm illegally on the streets of Portland’s Old Chinatown for $650, having failed to pass a background check to legally purchase a shotgun. Korbut was reportedly driving Naomi home when the gun went off, hitting her. His bail is set at $10,000. Drea spoke candidly about the emotional toll of the incident in an interview with KGW 8.
“I feel like it’s a nightmare… I’m still trying to process it. I’m still in shock. “I never thought this would happen,” he said. Reflecting on the tragedy, he added: “He is only 16 years old and now his whole life has changed forever.
This should never have happened. Know who your children hang out with. This is the tragedy of weapons.” To help cover Naomi’s medical expenses and long-term rehabilitation, a GoFundMe campaign has been released. The support has provided a ray of hope to the family during this heartbreaking time.
“The support we have received is overwhelming,” Drea said. “It’s what keeps me strong for her. Hold on to your children, you never know what is going to happen.” Naomi’s community continues to support her, hoping for her full recovery as she deals with the preventable nature of this heartbreaking incident.
