There’s no doubt that the late Queen warmly welcomed Meghan Markle into the Royal Family when she and Prince Harry began dating in 2017.
But the relationship seemed to weaken and within just a few years, the American actress and her husband had bitterly distanced themselves from their roles as royals.
They moved to California and quickly began to publicly criticize the institution to which Elizabeth II had dedicated her entire life.
The moment things went wrong in the couple’s relationship has baffled royal experts, but now the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden has studied the evidence in the Mail’s new YouTube TV series: Reading The Royals.
Speaking on the show, he said the moment the relationship first appeared to show cracks was after a row broke out over Meghan’s tiara for their wedding in May 2018.
In the lead-up to the big day, the Queen had graciously offered Meghan access to her tiara collection during what Harry later described as an “extraordinary morning.”
She allowed him to try them on in front of her and her faithful friend and dressmaker Angela Kelly, as well as a royal jewelry expert in her private dressing room.
But Meghan wanted to try on the tiaras when her hairdresser was visiting, as they are quite complicated to wear and require a trial beforehand.
On the new YouTube show, Richard Eden said the moment the Queen and Meghan’s relationship first appeared to show cracks was after a row broke out over Meghan’s wedding tiara.

However, something went very wrong, as when Meghan tried to arrange a test with Kelly, it was difficult to agree on a date and the tone of the messages between the couple and the Palace seemed to bother Kelly.
Perhaps used to giving orders to her subordinates on a television shoot, Meghan may not have been used to dealing with someone like Kelly, who, although a servant, was also a confidant of the Queen.
Harry denied in his memoir, Spare, that he angrily told Kelly: “What Meghan wants, Meghan gets.” However, they admitted that they had been exasperated by the dresser, who “gave me a look that made me shudder.”
And he added: ‘I could read a clear warning on his face. This is not over.’
Eden claims the tiara episode was an example of how Harry felt Meghan wasn’t getting the respect she deserved, which set a bad tone for his relationship with the entire Royal Family.
But the row was just one of many ups and downs between the Queen and Meghan’s relationship, which is explored in full in the latest episode of Reading the Royals.
