Australian pool queen Cate Campbell has undergone one final operation on her left shoulder after ending her illustrious swimming career.

The four-time gold medalist missed out on qualifying for the Paris Olympics in July and then decided to hang up his glasses for good.

The 32-year-old is adjusting to life outside the pool, but her body is still suffering from the stress it has been under over the years.

Campbell underwent shoulder surgery on Monday.

“The last six months of my career have really taken a toll on my body,” Campbell posted on Instagram.

‘My mind said ‘yes’ but my body said ‘no’. However, I’m glad I took things to the end.

“I am grateful to my medical team for getting me to the finish line and I am grateful to have their support in this next stage of recovery.

‘We were hoping the time off would allow my shoulder to calm down, and it was much better.

‘But as I want to lead a healthy, active lifestyle – swimming in the ocean, learning to surf and raising the kids – we thought it would be best to sort out the lingering issues now.

‘For shoulders that have taken more than 20,000,000 strokes, they are in very good condition.

“I’m looking forward to my final stint of injury rehab and getting back to throwing my hands in the air like I don’t care soon.”

Last week, Campbell noted that he had noticed big changes in his body since he retired.

“I’m discovering what my body looks like naturally for the first time in my adult life,” Campbell posted.

Cate enjoyed a very successful career with her glasses on, earning her first Olympic bronze medals at her first games in Beijing in 2008, when she was 16 years old.

Over the next three Games, he took to the stage frequently, winning four gold medals and one silver.

Campbell ended her brilliant career as one of the greatest Australian swimmers of all time.
