Around 7 million British adults own cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, the city watchdog has revealed as it sets out plans to regulate the industry.

The average investor now owns £1,842 in cryptocurrencies, compared to £1,595 three years ago.
This is according to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which is setting a timetable to regulate this volatile asset class, as investors are left unprotected if something goes wrong.
Research has shown that a third of investors mistakenly think that their cryptocurrency investments are protected by the regulator and that they could seek financial compensation.
