Oklahoma has been fined twice for its fans storming the field at the end of its 24-3 win over Alabama on Saturday night.
The Sooners were fined $100,000, as is customary, the first time a school’s fans have taken the field after a big win. But the fine was doubled with an additional $100,000 fine because the game was delayed by a premature storm on the field. Oklahoma fans invaded the playing surface with 28 seconds left.
Oklahoma fans invaded the field even though the Sooners needed to make one more play to end the game. The field had to be cleared of fans before Oklahoma could officially end the three-TD victory and begin celebrating for good.
The Oklahoma field storm came just hours after Arizona State fans prematurely stormed the field at the end of the Sun Devils’ victory over BYU. The game appeared to be over after Arizona State’s questionable clock management to end the game, but a review of the replay as fans surrounded the referees on the field determined that one second remained with Sam Leavitt’s pass landing in the stands.
That gave BYU a Hail Mary attempt to win the game, but Jake Retzlaff’s pass to Chase Roberts didn’t reach the end zone.
Oklahoma also wasn’t the only SEC school fined Sunday. Auburn was fined $100,000 for storming the field after the Tigers’ 43-41 four-overtime victory over Texas A&M. The victory was only Auburn’s second SEC win of the season and kept the team’s bowl hopes alive. The Tigers need to beat Alabama in Week 14 to finish 6-6 and reach a bowl game.
The SEC’s fine process requires that fines be paid to losing teams. So Alabama will receive $200,000 net from Oklahoma, while the Aggies will get the fine money from Auburn.
