Generation Z is going crazy over a “cool” iPhone feature that translates clothing care labels, while older generations joke that humanity is “doomed.”
Earlier this year, TikTok user Jennifer from the US posted a video of herself taking a photo of a care label she didn’t understand.
After this, you swipe up to access information about the image, which typically includes the date, location, and device it was taken on.
Since Jennifer’s photo contained laundry symbols, her phone gave her the option to search for more information about “laundry care” online.
This then took the mother to a list of clothing care symbols and their meanings, all within 10 seconds of taking the image.
The mother captioned the video: “Point of view: You’re 23 years old when you discover that your camera roll can tell you how to wash your clothes properly.”
Jennifer’s ‘laundry hack’, which launched with a new Apple update, has been viewed by more than 1.9 million people and racked up more than 65,000 likes.
The vast majority of TikTok users appreciated Jennifer’s advice about the iPhone and said they had always had a hard time remembering the meaning of the symbols.
One wrote: “I’m blown away… yesterday I was trying to figure out what those symbols meant.”
Tagging a friend in the comments, another added: ‘OMG!’
“The way I was LITERALLY looking up what the symbols meant yesterday,” said a third.
“Go cry on Android,” moaned a fourth.
However, others were stunned to see how many people had not memorized the meaning of each laundry symbol.
The video, which has racked up nearly 2 million views, begins with Jennifer taking a photo of her care label.
Since Jennifer’s photo contained laundry symbols, her phone gave her the option to search for more information about “laundry care” online.
Other TikTok users were stunned to see how many people hadn’t memorized the meaning of each laundry symbol.
One of them commented: “We are doomed.”
Another added: ‘Generation Z (needs their phones) for everything. Unable to survive without him.’
“After 15 years, I still know all the signs by heart,” said a third.
“The symbols are self-explanatory,” responded a fourth.
Meanwhile, a fifth said: ‘Not me, I had to learn these signs for care and well-being (lessons).’
In August 2022, it was revealed that more than half of Britons could not identify the “do not tumble dry” symbol on a care label.
Research commissioned by sustainable wet cleaning service Oxwash claims the national breakdown of destroyed clothing includes almost 53 million pairs of shrunken jeans.
