Despite the short relationship, Matt surprisingly became the focus of several songs on his latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, which was released in April this year.
Taylor is widely believed to have targeted him on the songs The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and Fortnight (featuring Post Malone), among others, prompting renewed scrutiny from fans over the period in which they dated.
And Matt recently appeared to take an astute dig at the hitmaker’s frequent choice to write songs about his past romances, calling it “such an obvious thing to draw on” that he doesn’t find it “interesting.”
Appearing on Joshua Citarella’s Doomscroll podcast on Tuesday, Matt stated that he didn’t want to write about adventures that he “became known for.”

He said: ‘Last year I became a much better known public figure for many different reasons. The only reason I was interested is because of what he was doing.
“So I think a lot of artists are very interested in their history, or interested in things that have happened outside of their art that people know about, and they want to address that, and that’s fair.”
He continued: ‘Maybe on my first record, when it was more of a series of diary entries, like little snippets of angst, I used to write a lot more about relationships and stuff like that.
“But honestly, I’d be lying if I made a record about, I don’t know, all the things that were said about me or my casual romantic relationships or whatever, that I’ve become known about.” Just because he was famous.
Taking a subtle swipe at artists who use their romances as inspiration, he said: “I think it’s an obvious thing to be inspired by and I’m just not interested in it.” And I think maintaining the status quo is something I always like to fight against.

‘So, the idea of making an album about something that happened to me personally, which by the time I release it will be like two years old. “I see people who do that too and it’s not interesting.”
Taylor has written several songs that are believed to be about her past romantic partners, including Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer and Joe Jonas.
Her eleventh album, The Tortured Poets Department, made references to her current boyfriend Travis Kelce, as well as her exes Joe and Matt.
Matt is now engaged to Gabbriette, who he was first seen kissing in New York in September last year.
