The racing world has been left in mourning with the news of the death of highly respected New Zealand jockey Johnathan Parkes at the age of just 35.

The champion jockey rode more than 1,000 winners in New Zealand, including 62 black-type races and 12 at Group One level.

The New Zealand star, who reportedly passed away on Friday night, last rode in Hastings on September 7.

The racing community gathered for an emotional tribute at Ellerslie Racecourse on Saturday.

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing acknowledged Parkes’ death with a statement.

“On behalf of the New Zealand racing industry, NZTR is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of highly respected jockey Johnathan Parkes overnight,” the statement began.

‘Our thoughts are with Johnathan’s closest family and friends at this time.

‘Johnathan was one of the best, riding over 1,000 winners in New Zealand. Parkes won 62 black type races, including 12 Group 1s.

“Support will be provided to jockeys and other affected participants during the weekend races.”

The surprising news has sparked tributes from across the racing world.

The thoroughbred’s owner, Steve Donovan, tweeted: “Absolutely shocked to hear of the passing of New Zealand jockey Johnathan Parkes.” He was very talented, he rode a couple of horses for me, including Tiptronic, I would have supported him all the way. Again, if anyone is struggling, make a call. Talk to someone. It’s never that bad.’

Broadcaster Aidan Rodley posted: ‘Twelve-time Group One winning jockey with over 1,000 wins to his name. Simply tragic; horrible news. Thoughts with so many people in New Zealand racing mourning Johnathan’s death.

The Australian Jockey Association posted: ‘On behalf of the AJ A, we send our prayers and love to the New Zealand racing community following the passing of the great New Zealand jockey Johnathan Parkes. RIP champion.’

Another racing fan posted: ‘Very sad to hear of the passing of Johnathan Parkes. JP was one of New Zealand’s best, with over 1000 winners. Parkes won 62 black type races, including 12 Group One races, and also won I WISH I WIN on debut. “Our thoughts are with his family.”
