Marty Sheargold has revealed he has been sober for four months as he broke his silence over his AFL Grand Final controversy.
The Triple M presenter, 53, spoke for the first time about an incident at the 2023 AFL Grand Final, saying it was a catalyst for him to “get back on the wagon.”
The radio star left the game at half-time after allegedly making a series of offensive comments to other guests while watching the game from a corporate box.

“I’m not going to start making excuses, but I had been sober for about three or four months and my big final day came up very quickly,” he said.

“Sometimes you have to know when your day is over, but I certainly did it for myself, there’s no escaping that.”

Following the incident, Marty personally said goodbye to his Triple M breakfast show and, after returning briefly in January, announced he would be leaving the show for good in July and moving to the network’s national broadcast slot.
Marty said the AFL incident made him re-evaluate his “love-hate” relationship with alcohol, and revealed he has been sober for four months, since June.
He said it took him 53 years to realize that alcohol is not a “friend” of his as he details his journey to sobriety.
In July, Marty told how he was leaving his Triple M show to spend more time with his family and prioritize “self-care” following his three-month absence following the AFL incident.
“Taking a long break at the end of last year reinforced the importance of spending more quality time with my family,” he said in a statement at the time.
