Review: Energy Secretary Ed Miliband
The future of a major nuclear power plant in North Wales has been thrown into doubt as Ed Miliband accelerates Britain’s transition to net zero emissions.
Construction of a third large-scale gigawatt plant at Wylfa on Anglesey could be affected after the Energy Secretary launched a review of nuclear plans, including a target for a quarter of the UK’s electricity to come from local nuclear power by 2050.
Former Conservative energy secretary Claire Coutinho said scrapping Wylfa would be “total economic madness”.
This comes after oil and gas companies warned that Miliband’s crackdown on North Sea drilling could cost the UK £13bn.
Plans for a new nuclear power plant in Wales were confirmed by the then government in May.
The site was expected to provide enough electricity to power 6 million homes for 60 years.
Possible revisions to the Wylfa plan could include the construction of several small modular reactors, the Telegraph reported.
Lord Hunt, the energy minister, said: “No decision has been taken yet.”
