Matthijs de Ligt said goodbye to Bayern Munich fans with an emotional message on social media.

United have completed the £60m double signing of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.

Dutch defender De Ligt, 25, will be reunited with United manager Erik Ten Hag, under whom he played at Ajax, after agreeing a five-year contract with the option of a further year.

He spent two seasons at the Allianz Arena, winning a Bundesliga title and a German Super Cup.

De Ligt has been left out of the starting XI at times during the 2023-24 season due to a knee injury, with Thomas Tuchel preferring the central defensive partnership of Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae.

However, Bayern fans made their opposition to the transfer clear with a petition that gathered more than 70,000 signatures.

De Ligt wrote on Instagram: ‘Dear Bayern fans, I want to thank each and every one of you for all your love and support.

‘I have had two incredible years playing for this beautiful club. It has been a real honour to have played for a club like Bayern Munich. We have achieved unforgettable moments together.

“Winning the title and enjoying some incredible nights in the Champions League. These memories will stay with me forever.”

‘That’s why leaving this club is bittersweet. I will always remember the love and support I have received from the players, staff and fans. The recent petition signed by so many of you has touched me deeply.

“Thank you all for these two incredible years. I wish FC Bayern the best of luck and hope they win many more titles, as Bayern have always done. Mia San Mia.”

De Ligt has bolstered United’s central defence following the departure of Raphael Varane, while fellow summer arrival Leny Yoro is set to miss up to three months with a foot injury sustained against Arsenal in pre-season.

Mazraoui, 26, also played under Ten Hag at Ajax. He won three league titles with the Dutch club and another with Bayern.
