Basketball fans have made funny jokes about Boomers star Jack McVeigh following Australia’s elimination from the Paris Olympics.

McVeigh, who has become famous for sharing motivational messages on social media, came under fire earlier this week after sharing a seemingly “cruel” interaction with his wife following the Boomers’ opening-match loss to Spain in Paris.

“I got mad at my wife after my first Olympics. ‘You’re so talented,’ she told me,” his tweet read.

Accommodating and kind, right? Well, according to McVeigh, he was missing the point.

“It’s not talent, it’s dedication,” I replied. “One day you might be able to wear the Australian uniform, but are you prepared to dedicate your whole life to trying?” he wrote.

Unfortunately, McVeigh was unable to channel his own motivational words as Australia fell to an extra-time defeat by Serbia in the quarter-finals, meaning they will not be able to emulate their bronze medal win in Tokyo three years ago.

As a result, some fans have taken to X to mock the NBL star, who is set for a big move to the United States.

“I’m more nervous than Jack McVeigh’s wife trying to give him a compliment right now,” one fan joked on X.

Another said: ‘I challenge Jack McVeigh to tweet after this game.’

“I wonder if Jack McVeigh’s wife would be proud of him today,” asked a third fan.

‘Can someone get Jack McVeigh’s wife to tell him he’s actually an idiot?’ said a fourth.

“Jack McVeigh is going to be very angry with his wife after this game,” joked a fifth.

Despite Wednesday morning’s disappointment, things are looking up for the 28-year-old, who married his wife Bethany this year.

McVeigh is one of the team’s standout players and his excellent form has earned him a contract with the NBA’s Houston Rockets.

He will face his national teammate Josh Giddey, who plays for the Chicago Bulls.

But Giddey was beside himself with disappointment after the loss.

Giddey was left in tears after falling in Paris.

“We put ourselves in a great position to win that game, but we fell short in overtime. It’s heartbreaking,” Giddey said.

“And it kills me to have to wait four more years to get another chance. But, man, I’m so proud of this group. I love this team. And you know, our coaches, our fans, they deserved a lot more than this.

“I don’t know how to sum it up now. It’s very hard and you live it shortly after the game. But, you know, I love this team. And I thought we had the group to go all the way.

“We have to wait another four years and this feeling is horrible and it’s going to hurt, but you know, it’s going to help us. And we’ll be back in Los Angeles (for the 2028 Olympics).”
