There are currently over 325 Team GB athletes in Paris representing the UK at the 2024 Olympic Games.

But while these sports stars will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of athletes, they are also (unwittingly) making waves in the fashion industry.

In recent weeks, celebrities and social media stars have been sporting Union Jack-inspired clothing in a nod to the British team.

Earlier this month, singer Doja Cat performed at the Wireless festival in Finsbury Park wearing a custom-made Union Jack corset.

The 28-year-old American rapper paired her spray-painted top with black lace underwear, fishnet stockings and a silver chain belt.

Meanwhile, singer Rachel Chinouriri took a similar approach when she appeared at Glastonbury last month.

The 25-year-old musician opted for a 90s grunge-inspired ensemble for her performance, consisting of a blue tie-dye T-shirt, a ripped denim midi skirt and a Union Jack halterneck top.

The Union Jack upper also had a spray paint effect and was finished with rhinestones and star-print studs.

Last month, TikTok star Rachel, who has 176,000 followers, also shared a video in which she sported a pair of skinny jeans emblazoned with the Union Jack.

The vintage acid-washed jeans featured the flag running down one side and were also covered in rhinestones.

The influencer paired the grunge jeans with a grey t-shirt, a Vivienne Westwood bag and a black off-the-shoulder top.

One fan gushed: “We need you!”

Another added: ‘What a cool denim!’:

What’s more, the high streets are also taking notice of the renewed interest in Union Jack fashion.

Urban Outfitters currently sells French Connection’s Union Jack T-shirts, which feature their old FCUK branding from the 2000s.

Meanwhile, ASOS also has a £20 T-shirt from JJXX that features the Union Jack alongside ‘GB 24’ in a nod to the Olympics.

As well as this, GAP has also brought back its 2000s unisex Union Jack hoodies, which retail for £30.

Geri Halliwell turned the Union Jack into a fashion moment when she wore her iconic flag-print minidress to the 1997 Brit Awards.

In an interview with Vogue in 2020, the singer revealed that she came up with the patriotic design because she wanted to style a simple black Gucci dress.

Referring to Tom Ford and his work with the brand at the time, he added: “I looked at it and thought it didn’t really say much.

“I’ve always tried to put my finger in the wind and feel what’s going on at the moment, and if I feel it, you’ll feel it too and we’ll connect. So I thought: (it’s) the British, why not a British flag?”

Detailing how she came to alter the dress, she added: “I don’t know if this is true, but you’re not supposed to cut up a flag… so I found a tea towel. My sister did it, she was better at sewing than me.”

However, when a stylist told her she could be considered “racist” because she could be associated with the National Front, she decided to add a peace symbol to the outfit.

“I thought, ‘Oh my God… no, stop it. We celebrate all cultures,'” she explained. ‘That’s why I put the peace sign on the back.

“And then during the performance, we had our backs to the audience, so you could see the peace sign… I think we found power in each other. That was the goal of the group.”

Speaking effusively about the impact the outfit had on society at the time, she added: ‘I woke up the next morning and my picture in that dress was on the front page of every newspaper.

Geri Halliwell’s Union Jack dress has been recreated countless times over the past 27 years, including a nod from Dua Lipa at the 2021 BRITs.

The 28-year-old entertained fans as she performed a medley of some of her biggest hits at the ceremony, held at London’s O2, while sporting a striking ensemble that included a Union Jack-print wrap skirt, with a daring thong underneath.

Hit singer Dua’s ensemble choice was reminiscent of the patriotic minidress Geri Horner wore when she performed at the same awards show.
