Meta is in talks to buy a £3.8bn stake in Ray-Ban maker Essilor Luxottica as the tech giant continues to push its virtual reality sunglasses.

Facebook’s owner has been considering a stake of up to 5 percent in the £73 billion Franco-Italian group to deepen its partnership with the world’s largest eyewear company.

The pair have worked together for the past three years when they launched the Meta smart glasses, which cost around £300 and allow users to take photos and videos, listen to music, make calls and live stream to Facebook and Instagram.

Meta has invested heavily in the metaverse, a version of the internet that provides access to virtual reality through headsets, and is focusing on growing its VR and metaverse arm.
