The King and Queen of Denmark visited Graasten Palace today

The King and Queen of Denmark have retired to their summer palace in Graasten for the first time since being crowned.

Frederik X, 56, and his wife Mary, 52, were mobbed by awaiting fans as they made their annual appearance at Graasten Palace in Jutland, southern Denmark, home to many of their family portraits.

The King and Queen, who ascended to the throne on January 14, 2024, attended the summer retreat for the first time as reigning monarchs, and the charming occasion was well received by royal fans.

The couple seemed equally emotional as they couldn’t seem to keep their hands off each other, at one point Frederik gently placed a hand on his wife’s back.

They were all smiles as they posed for the cameras, despite their marriage being plagued by rumours of marital problems since the King was photographed in Madrid with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova last year.

During today’s outing, the Queen received several bouquets of flowers from well-wishers. The royal couple was also welcomed by Mayor Erik Lauritzen.

Mary cut an elegant figure in a white summer dress decorated with a green floral print and short puffed sleeves.

She paired the look with a pair of nude open-toed heels, which she stylishly styled with a hat of the same colour. Her accessories of choice were a pair of dangling pearl earrings and gold bracelets.

Her brunette hair was styled in loose waves and tucked delicately behind her ears, while her makeup was perfect for the occasion, as she sported a luminous foundation, a glamorous smoky eye and a pink lip.

Meanwhile, the King looked dapper in a smart navy suit, crisp white shirt and blue striped tie. He left his blazer unbuttoned and slipped on a smart pair of black loafers to finish off.

According to a publication made by the official of the royal house Instagram Page, Their Majesties descended after a walk of almost a kilometer to the palace, where they greeted the citizens of Graasten.

Adults and children alike waved Danish flags and held up camera phones in the hope of catching a glimpse of the monarchs.

The walk to Graasten Palace in South Jutland is part of a 90-year-old tradition that sees the royal family gather for a private summer retreat.

The departure comes as the King and Queen of Denmark appeared to be in high spirits as they were welcomed in the village of Igaliku in the second week of their trip to Greenland.

They were all smiles as they chatted with supporters and were greeted by people holding Danish and local flags, with stunning green hills in the background.

Frederik and his wife smiled for photos in matching rain gear as they explored the south of the island.

The royal’s Instagram account revealed the couple arrived yesterday and spent the night in the region, where Norse explorer Erik the Red’s ship landed more than 1,000 years ago.

The couple walked to the village along Kongevejen, a gravel road leading from Itilleq to Igaliku, named after Frederick IX, who visited in 1952, and famous for its stunning views.

They both looked ready for action in their hiking outfits as they walked through the countryside.

Mary showed off her sporty style in dark green trousers, paired with an elegant cream-coloured button-down shirt. Her hair was first styled in loose waves, but then the Queen pulled her hair back into a bun.

Meanwhile, Frederik put on black hiking pants and a light brown hoodie for the hike.

At first, the couple wore matching sweaters (Mary’s in forest green, Frederik’s in khaki), but they took them off when the temperature rose.

The Danish royal family has been travelling around Greenland since last week. Yesterday, Mary visited a sustainable children’s institution in Nuuk called Naasut, which means “flower” in Greenlandic.

The summer break comes after a turbulent year for the Danish monarchy that included rumours that King Frederik had had an affair (which were strenuously denied) and Queen Margrethe’s shock abdication on New Year’s Day.

King Frederik’s evening with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova in Madrid last autumn shook the monarchy.

Snaps of the couple showed them heading to a traditional flamenco restaurant in the Spanish capital, where Genoveva lives, where Spanish magazine Lecturas reported they dined together until the early hours.

After the photos were published, rumors of a romance between the two circulated, which Genoveva flatly denied.

However, cracks began to appear in Queen Mary and King Frederick’s relationship after his date night with Genevieve and the couple, who have been married for 20 years, displayed cold body language towards each other in public appearances.

But as the royal couple headed off on their summer vacation, it seemed there were smiles all around.
