Labour urged to stop ministerial merry-go-round

If there is one thing that businesses want from a Labour government, it is stability.

As the following table shows, in recent years there has been a veritable carousel of ministers which, according to experts, has undermined the effectiveness of the government.

The rate of staff turnover in some of the Whitehall departments covering business, finance and investment accelerated after the Brexit referendum in 2016, when politics entered a new era of turmoil.

The new Work and Pensions Secretary, Liz Kendall, will be the tenth person to hold the role since 2015.

The constant shuffling of ministers is “very damaging” and means they focus on “quick wins” rather than long-term policymaking, warned Tim Durrant, programme director at the Institute for Government think tank.
