Emergency crews are battling a massive fire in the city centre that has caused a tunnel to fill with smoke.
Several collapsible and shipping containers burst into flames at the intersection of Wren Street and O’Connell Terrace in Brisbane’s Bowen Hills shortly after 8.30pm on Tuesday night.
Motorists made multiple calls to triple zero after seeing plumes of smoke coming from the bypass tunnel in the city centre.
“On arrival, a number of demountable vehicles and shipping containers were on fire,” a Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
‘Smoke affected the tunnel as a result.
‘All persons present at the scene have been accounted for and the fire is currently under control.
It is not known whether the RNA showground or the Cross River Rail work site were affected as emergency services closed the road.
A Queensland Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia they were called to the area at 8:10 p.m.
Plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the tunnel and from the site of the fire, where several cargo containers and demountable vehicles were burning (pictured).
“We are cooperating in every way we can, especially in matters of public safety. The investigation is still ongoing,” he said.
Bowen Hills resident Dan Martin said: The courier mail He heard ‘some explosions’ from his apartment.
“Normally we hear a lot of sirens in the area, but I looked out the window and thought, ‘Wait, I can see smoke,'” she said.
