A hair specialist has revealed the “right way” to use conditioner and how often you should wash your hair.
Dr. Crystal Aguh, associate professor of Dermatology and olaplex A member of the Scientific Advisory Board, she shed light on the mistakes Australians tend to make in the shower and the two “must-have” products that customers can’t get enough of.
While most only condition the ends of the hair, Dr. Aguh recommends applying the product from root to tip.
“This allows the hair to stay hydrated and helps minimize damage caused by daily use,” she told FEMAIL.
The professional added that a quick 30-second lather is all that is needed when shampooing your hair, and additional cleanses can actually cause more harm than good.
The number of times you should wash your hair will also be determined by the ‘curl type’.
“For proper washing and cleansing, lathering for 15 to 30 seconds is sufficient. Double shampooing may be helpful if there is a lot of product buildup,” said Dr. Aguh.
She recommends Olaplex No. 4 ($54) and Number 5 ($54), both have only skyrocketed in popularity since their original release.

How often should you wash your hair?
Dr. Aguh revealed that washing frequency varies and is strongly influenced by hair type.
For example, if you have straight, fine hair that gets greasy very easily, then your ideal washing frequency may be between one and two days.
But if you have wavy hair, the ideal washing frequency may be every two to three days.
For those with very curly hair, washing once a week is ideal, although once every two weeks can also work well. This gives curly hair ample opportunities to moisturize and condition it regularly.
How long should you lather when washing your hair with shampoo?
According to Dr. Aguh, you only need to lather your hair with shampoo for up to 30 seconds.
“The chemistry of shampoo and conditioning is relatively simple,” she said.
“When a shampoo is applied to the hair, it leaves a negative charge, while the conditioner has a positive charge. If more negative charges are exposed by shampooing the hair twice, conditioners may work better, but only to a point.
‘This is because overuse of shampoo can also damage hair. It is important to achieve an ideal balance.’
She added that if your hair doesn’t feel dirty after two days, washing it with shampoo followed by conditioner is “more than enough.”
