Mexico plays its second match of the 2024 Copa América on Wednesday (9 p.m. ET, FS1/Univision) against Venezuela in what is sure to be a sold-out SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
El Tri opened their tournament with a bittersweet victory over Jamaica on Saturday night at NRG Stadium in Houston. Mexico achieved a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Gerardo Arteaga in the 69th minute, but lost Edson Álvarez to injury in his first match with the Tri captain’s armband. Alvarez confirmed via social media on Tuesday that his tournament is over as the West Ham star will focus on rehabilitating his injured leg.
Venezuela faced no such obstacles in its first match of the tournament against Ecuador. La Vinotinto achieved a surprising 2-1 victory after Ecuador’s captain, Enner Valencia, received a red card for a dangerous play inside the area that found his cue in the face of José Martínez of the Philadelphia Union. With one man down, Ecuador gave up two goals in the second half.
Wednesday’s match won’t necessarily determine which team advances to the knockout stage, but a win for Mexico would give them a big lead with six points at the top of the Group B standings heading into their final group match against Ecuador. on Sunday.
