Wollongong train station: Body is found in carpark – as cops arrest a man

A man’s body was found in a train station parking lot and police arrested another man.

NSW Police officers found the man’s body in the car park on Station Street next to Wollongong railway station on the NSW South Coast at around 7.20am on Sunday. .

The deceased is understood to be a 68-year-old man who lived in the local area, however he has not yet been formally identified.

“A post-mortem examination will be carried out in the coming days to determine the cause of death and confirm the identity,” New South Wales Police said in a statement.

A 37-year-old man was arrested by police at around 10.30am and officers, along with detectives from the homicide squad, prepared the crime scene.

The man has not been charged.

Earlier on Sunday morning, police officers arrived at the area before police taped off the multi-level car park.

Forensic detectives were also on scene as they searched the scene and collected evidence.

Terrified locals watched from a shop, a church and a cafe opposite the parking lot as police blocked the main entrance.

Pastor Josh Hammann said locals were shocked by the scene of police cars in the area.

“We understand that something really sad has happened,” he told ABC.

“This is very much a police matter, but our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
