A luxury outdoor furniture brand has recalled patio lounge chairs after reports that they can cause so much injury to fingers that they need to be amputated.
Frontgate issued a recall for 70,000 Newport teak and aluminum chaise lounges last week.
“When adjusting the backrest while seated, the adjustable backrest may unexpectedly lower with force, posing a finger crush and amputation hazard,” said the recall notice posted to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Frontgate received three reports of customers’ fingers trapped between the frame of the $1,400 chair and its backrest, two of which resulted in partial finger amputations and the other also required surgery.
The chairs affected by the recall were sold at Frontgate stores in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas.

They were also available for purchase on the store’s website and in its catalogs from February 2014 to December 2023.
The chairs were available in five different colors: architectural bronze, champagne silver, cobalt, matte black and matte white.
They were sold in sets of two, in either “distressed” or “natural” finish.
The loungers measure 51 inches long and 31 inches wide, with a powder-coated aluminum or teak frame and an adjustable mesh backrest.
In January, more than half a million beds sold at Walmart and other popular retailers were recalled amid reports of injuries.
The problematic bed frames were sold at stores including Walmart and Wayfair between July 2018 and November 2023.
The recall was announced on January 18 after 128 complaints that the bed had collapsed and 36 people were reported injured.
