A 6ft 1in taller woman has revealed how she overcame her own feelings of self-awareness to date with a man smaller than her.
Jess Kay, 22, from Newcastle, said she had never dated anyone shorter than when she met Matthew Brown-King, 24, who is five feet tall, in November last year.
Freelance content writer Jess initially said she opposed holding Matthew’s hand in public because she was “ really concerned about it ” and “ didn’t want people staring. ”
22-year-old Jess Kay from Newcastle said she had never dated anyone shorter than when she met Matthew Brown-King, 24, who is 1.5 meters tall, in November last year.
Freelance content writer Jess initially said she opposed holding Matthew’s hand in public because she was “ really concerned about it ” and “ didn’t want people staring ”
But after kissing video editor Matthew on a night out, the couple never looked back.
Jess said, “My friends were a little shocked because I’ve never dated anyone smaller than me.
“I was fully aware that I was taller than my partner because I didn’t really want people to look at me, I didn’t want to attract more attention than I already was.
“At first I was really worried about it, I didn’t really want to hold his hand. But he was really proud to hold my hand. ‘

Jess admitted that her friends were amazed at her husband’s choice because she had never dated anyone shorter than her. Pictured, the pair are beaming on a night out
Jess moved in with Matthew and the couple enjoys more time together while Matt is on leave.
Despite Matthew’s support, Jess had to endure some teasing.
She said, “His friends compared me to Peter Crouch. I feel a little self-conscious about it, but I think it’s just a joke.
“I don’t like to be compared to being male. I want to be feminine, but sometimes I don’t feel that way, I feel kind of lanky. Tall women are often kind of the boys and they are not considered cute.
“But then again, there are the Victoria’s Secret models that are really long, so there are advantages to being long.”
The couple, pictured together, met through work and have been together for eight months
Matthew said that height has “never been a factor bothering him” when it comes to dating and “is not something he had thought of before.”
He continued, “When I met Jess we both sat, I didn’t even notice her height! Jess has always seemed a little shy, which I just considered part of her personality.
“I didn’t even think it was because she was unsure about her height. She said she sees people staring when we’re gone, but I never really noticed.
“I don’t care if she was tall or short – it doesn’t bother me and her height is fine for me.
“I think Jess just needed someone to give her that conviction, and I’m glad I was able to help her trust that way.”
In the photo, Jess explained that she did everything she could to avoid drawing attention to herself
Jess added: ‘I am certainly much more confident and comfortable with my height since I went out with Matthew.
“I can hold his hand in public without feeling uncomfortable or just as anxious.
“I hate everything that draws attention to me, but I have the mindset that no one will look at or care about us – they will be in their own world and focus on their business.
“I have severe anxiety, so I think my height contributed to that, but Matthew is so supportive. He doesn’t care about my height, he loves it and says more of me to cuddle! ‘
