After a summer of sun and fun, it may take a while to get back into your daily routine at work or school, you certainly don’t want your computer crawling at a snail’s pace. Still, after months of streaming the latest binge-worthy shows or scrolling through social media to watch puppy videos, it can seem like your device has thrown the white flag of defeat.

If your system has slowed down, here are six ways to clean up and help speed up your computer so you can get back to work. Or puppy videos. We are not here to judge.

Step #1: Uninstall unused apps and programs

Unused programs take up valuable storage space. Remove anything you haven’t used in more than six months. While you’re at it, remove unnecessary add-ons such as toolbars, plugins, and extensions.

Step 2: Download antivirus software

Antivirus software such as System Mechanic helps improve computer performance by identifying and fixing the root causes of problems with your device. The software helps clean up your computer’s clutter, fixes unstable Wi-Fi connections and frees up storage space so that your computer runs almost like new.

System Mechanic can also help protect you from cyber criminals. For example, hackers can deploy malware, including viruses, spyware, adware, trojans, and more. “The most common hacking method is scam messages, emails or social media posts, where hackers disguise themselves as a trusted person or brand so they can steal personal information,” said Catherine Hiley, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, tells Yahoo Life. If you click on unknown links in these messages, criminals can gain access to your identity, passwords, [and] bank details just to name a few. And with this information, hackers can exploit their victims.”

Antivirus programs like System Mechanic can help protect you by scanning files before you open them and detecting malicious code as it tries to run. In addition, System Mechanic will delete infected files and block access to dangerous websites.

Step 3: Add more RAM to your hardware

RAM is temporary memory used by your computer’s operating system and helps your programs run smoothly. The more programs you use, the more RAM your computer needs. Otherwise, your computer will become slow due to lack of RAM. Focus data systems recommends boosting your RAM with extra memory sticks as an easy fix, or you can replace your existing RAM, if needed.

Step 4: Install a browser extension for bookmarks or tab manager

Raise your hand if you’re guilty of opening a million tabs. Yes, we thought so. Keeping tons of tabs open at once can slow down your system considerably. Use a tab management extension to organize tabs into groups that make sense to you. It allows you to quickly find what you are looking for without slowing down your computer.

Step #5: Clean your (virtual) cookie jar

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your hard drive and contain data such as login details, shopping preferences and other personal information. By clearing cookies you can make your device faster.

Step #6: Update your software and programs

Your operating system needs regular updates to keep up with new threats. Most apps also require periodic upgrades to stay secure. Keep track of updates for your system and make sure to install them in a timely manner.
