New Zealand authorities did not issue any tsunami warning and did not report immediate damage.
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Wednesday in the Pacific Ocean off the southern coast of New Zealand, according to the US Geological Survey.
The agency said the quake occurred at 02:21 GMT at a depth of 33 km near the Auckland Islands, a small, virtually uninhabited archipelago located 450 km from New Zealand’s South Island.
For its part, the New Zealand authorities did not issue any warning of the danger of a tsunami, and did not announce any immediate damage.
In Invercargill, the closest major city to the quake site, a city council official said there were no reports of any residents feeling the quake or any damage to infrastructure.
