A California family is mourning the tragic death of a little girl after two of the family’s Rottweilers attacked her Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred in a gated community on Palomino Drive in Covina, Los Angeles County, prompting an immediate response from sheriff’s deputies.
According KABC, ABC affiliateOfficers discovered the boy had been attacked in the backyard by a 10-year-old Rottweiler and a 6-year-old Rottweiler mix. Emergency services took the girl to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead at 1:23 p.m.
The authorities reported that the two dogs, along with two additional animals, were removed from the home as a precaution. Investigators discovered that the girl had lived with the dogs her entire life without prior incidents. Only one other family member reported being injured by the animals.
Although no crime is suspected, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the incident remains under investigation. The devastating loss comes just days after another family pet died in a separate incident in Georgia, highlighting broader grief surrounding family dogs.
Justin Carr of Georgia said Fox 5 Atlanta that their beloved family dog, Zeta, was shot and killed by police officers responding to a 911 call Monday night. Officers claimed Zeta ran toward them while they were searching for a person in danger near the Carr family home.
Cobb County Police released a statement explaining the officer’s actions: “The officer perceived the animal as potentially threatening and, in an effort to protect himself, fired his service weapon, resulting in the dog being fatally injured.”
Carr, however, rejected the characterization of Zeta as a threat, insisting that the dog had grown up around three young children and never showed aggression. “Tonight, the Cobb County Police came to my house for a ‘noise complaint’ after returning from dinner, and then proceeded to shoot and kill our beloved Zeta.
She was the sweetest dog we have ever had,” Carr said in a Facebook post. Carr further argued that the 911 call could not have originated from his home since his family was away at the time. He described the incident as “senseless and avoidable” and vowed to seek justice for Zeta.
Cobb County police acknowledged the impact of the shooting and confirmed that an internal review is underway, although they were unable to locate the source of the initial distress call. Both incidents underscore the heartbreaking complexities surrounding family pets, safety and tragic outcomes, leaving grieving families searching for answers and accountability.
