49ers WR Deebo Samuel to miss 'a couple of weeks' with calf strain, says coach Kyle Shanahan

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to miss “a couple of weeks” with a calf strain, coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday.

If Samuel is only out for two weeks, there is no need to consider placing him on injured reserve. Players on injured reserve must miss a minimum of four games, according to NFL rules.

Samuel had five receptions for 54 yards in San Francisco’s 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He suffered a calf strain late in the game, though it’s unclear on what play he suffered the injury.

Through two games, Samuel leads the 49ers with 13 receptions for 164 yards. He has also rushed for 13 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Samuel joins Christian McCaffrey among the 49ers’ injured players. The running back was placed on injured reserve last week due to Achilles tendinitis and calf tightness.

As valuable as Samuel has been to the 49ers offense during his six seasons, he has never played a full schedule of games. Last season, Samuel missed two games with A small fracture in the shoulderIn 2022, he was limited to 12 games due to A medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain and an ankle sprain.

For Week 3, the 49ers play the Los Angeles Rams, who will be without receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua for several games.
